Celebrating Success- FSB Welsh Finalists

Celebrating Success- FSB Welsh Finalists

Following our success at the West Cheshire and North Wales Chamber of Commerce Awards in November of last year, it’s been an honour to be shortlisted as Welsh Finalists for two Federation of Small Businesses Awards.

“Taking the time out to evaluate all that the past year has entailed – our successes, plans for growth, achievements of our people, and the loyalty of our customers – as part of the application has been a really valuable experience. As we continue to grow as a company, we’re delighted to have been shortlisted for both categories- Family Business of the Year, and Scale-Up Business of the Year” says Sales & Marketing Manager, Nadia.

Scale Up Business of the Year

“For businesses that have taken the leap to a whole new level, demonstrating true entrepreneurial spirit, market leading growth and outstanding leadership.”

“Platts is currently enjoying a sustained period of growth as a business- including manufacturing output, international trade and job creation and sales.

In 2018, 24-hour production capacity has increased from a 5-day week to 7 days, to manufacture enough stock to meet increased customer demand, and grow market share. 7 additional full-time permanent jobs have been created within the last 6 months and further job creation is planned.

We believe our customers are best placed to speak of what makes Platts stand out. Livestock Manager, Thomas Baines-Sizeland, from longstanding customer, Anglia Farmers (AF), describe how Platts have developed a successful partnership with AF.

“Platts Animal Bedding have been a key supplier of The AF Group for many years. They have always provided a brilliant service, high quality product and, most importantly, value for AF members across the UK. Platts are an integral part of our livestock business and we are proud to work alongside them.”

Demonstrating sustainable business practices, including corporately responsible supply chain and environmental practices- Platts were recently honoured to receive the Royal Warrant to HM The Queen, following 7 years supplying the Royal Farms at Windsor.”

Family Business of the Year

“Championing the big contribution family firms make to business, this category seeks to reward the UK’s top family-run smaller businesses.”

“Established in 1973 by husband-and-wife team, Robert & Christine Platt, now employing 58 staff, Platts have a strong brand-presence Nationwide.

Starting as farmers, selling sawdust to neighbouring farms- it soon became apparent that the supply of animal bedding was more than a part-time job alongside farming for the Platts, who began hand-bagging sawdust, and delivering locally. Staying close to their agricultural roots, the company still demonstrate the family ethos today- differentiating from competitors with a professional-yet-personal approach. Many customers have built a rapport with their Account Managers, who know and understand customer needs.

Despite family members being involved, there are more staff who are not part of the ‘family’ yet are considered an extended family- across all levels. This seamless blend of family and non-family staff makes Platts a supportive and well-balanced employer- standing out from other family firms!

Platts are passionate about the personal and professional development of their people. It’s recognised by management that investing in people will make for a sustainable workforce – family or not- who will take the company into the future. Recently, this has included HGV tests, apprenticeship training, post-graduate qualifications and courses accredited by NPORS to name a few.”

Here’s what the FSB have to say about the Small Business Awards 2018:

“The FSB Wales Celebrating Small Business Awards 2018 was a tremendous success, seeing businesses from right across Wales walking away with awards across a range of categories.

The Welsh winners will also be entered for the UK-wide grand final held in London in May 2019, and will be in the running to be crowned FSB Business of the Year for the UK.”

Some of our team are looking forward to attending the Welsh Finals in Cardiff at the end of March- where we’ll discover if we’ve made it through to the National Awards.
